Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science (SOEST), Department of Oceanography, located in Honolulu, Hawai?i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES: Develops and applies liquid chromatography (LC) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) techniques to quantify protein biomarkers in laboratory and field samples. Conducts laboratory experiments to assess the response of phytoplankton to nutrient stress and changing environmental conditions. Reports scientific results from research projects through talks at national and international meetings, and scientific papers in the peer-reviewed literature. Assists senior undergraduate and graduate students with related projects and participates in laboratory work at sea.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING:* PhD from an accredited college or university in Oceanography, Environmental Science, Microbiology or a related field. (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire.). EXPERIENCE: Two to four (2-4) years of previous research experience in chemical oceanography, biological oceanography, environmental microbiology or a related field. KNOWLEDGE: Extensive knowledge of either ocean biogeochemical cycles, molecular microbiology or biochemistry. Working knowledge of data analysis techniques and data visualization. ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to conduct research and work collaboratively with colleagues. Strong communication and scientific writing skills demonstrated by a record of publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals, or other documented records of achievement. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Ability to work on research vessels at sea up to five (5) days. POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai?i?s and/or business entity’s policies and procedures. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with marine micro-organisms in laboratory settings, liquid chromatography or mass spectrometry techniques, and a history of conducting research at sea.
