Dear all,
we invite applications for a project scientist (postdoc) position Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany on the advancement of ocean data assimilation.
You will work as member of AWI’s Data Assimilation Team in the project COMEDI, funded by the European Union, in a consortium of 11 European partners specialized on ocean data assimilation. COMEDI will advance ocean data assimilation and related software for later use in the Copernicus Marine Service. AWI’s leading open-source data assimilation framework PDAF plays a central role and will be further enhanced in the project.
At AWI, the project work will focus on different aspects enhancing ensemble data assimilation methods, software and their application. In particular, the project work includes: Developing enhanced nonlinear ensemble data assimilation methods and to implement and assess them in PDAF. Implementing and testing advanced data assimilation functionality like multi-scale assimilation. Developing new interfaces between PDAF and different data assimilation systems of project partners and to AI-based assimilation methods. Extending the ensemble assimilation system of the Forecasting Center for the Baltic Sea, which uses the model NEMO-ERGOM coupled to PDAF. Assessing the enhanced assimilation methods by performing data assimilation experiments with the NEMO-ERGOM-PDAF system for the Baltic Sea. The work will involve programming in Fortran and Python, and the use of high-performance computing for the ensemble data assimilation and it offers great opportunities to collaborative work with the project partners.
